Barnes & Noble’s Nook has weaker Christmas period
US book retailer Barnes & Noble saw its fledgling Nook ereader unit falter over the Christmas season, as it sold fewer devices than in the same period last year, and saw growth in sales of digital books and magazines fall.
The company, which launched its range of ereaders and tablets in the UK in time for Christmas, said revenues for the unit fell 12.6 per cent over the period year-on-year, even as sales of content improved.
The move will come as a blow to the company as it aims to take on the likes of Amazon in the rapidly growing ebook market.
The Nook, launched in 2009, has been the cornerstone of Barnes & Noble’s strategy to counter the shift by many book readers to digital books.
