Baring too much skin at work is a risk
DEAR VEXED: I work in a bank and the dress code is very professional. All the same, I’ve not been able to help myself from baring some skin lately. But I’m worried I’m being judged negatively. How can I enjoy my summer wardrobe without going too far? Lucy, private wealth
I can understand your desire to pay homage to the sun. After all, when you spend your days in an office, and sun is so rare in the UK, you want to do all you can to enjoy it even when you’re inside.
But my dear, you work in a bank. Formality is all-important. And if you’ve sensed you’re being judged, then you almost certainly are. Someone, somewhere, will be offended, or irritated, by what your clothing implies. Some may find it a distraction to be confronted with your sexy booty when they’re trying to finish a tricky spreadsheet. Others may be jealous of your tan. Most importantly, people may be concerned that you’re conveying an unserious attitude, and that is not what banks need right now. They certainly don’t want clients to question their seriousness and a woman in a minidress or kaftan and flip-flops will hardly help.
So while you just want to enjoy the summer, there may be some grave issues here. You could even be risking your job. My advice is to bring a little bag with you, containing a cardigan or blouse and skirt, and change as soon as you arrive at work. After all, the heat of summer is felt mostly before and after work – the Tube, the walk from home and drinks afterwards, so that’s the time to wear the handkerchief shirts and strappy dresses. At work, no armpits, no bra straps and no un-pedicured toes. Wear skirts in cool materials, such as cotton or silk, and short-sleeved silk shirts (though wear extra deodorant as sweat shows up badly on silk). A lightweight cardigan or short sleeved jacket will give you a modest, professional look and will be light to carry in your little bag.
It’s hot outside, but a bank is a bank. You’d best remember that before it’s too late.
