ARM is years ahead of rivals, boasts chief
UK chip designer ARM is still years ahead of rival Intel, its chief executive Warren East told City A.M. yesterday.
Intel has set is sights on ARM’s near monopoly of the mobile chip market and launched a smartphone with Orange at this year’s Mobile World Congress event.
East said: “There is more competition in the market and Intel have made no secret of the fact they are targeting this space but… we see technology that is one to two generations behind ARM and we see ARM moving further ahead.
“This show is all about quad-core A9s and duel-core A15s. Intel is getting a bit more competitive but given that we are moving the competitive goalposts we’re not hugely perturbed.
“They are a big, successful company so we need to be aware of what they are doing but we see ARM as a long way ahead.”
East added that the explosion in mobile internet plays into ARM’s business model. He said: “There are billions of consumers connected to the internet through phones. The ARM business model, with its diversity of chips, means there is something for everybody. You are not going to have 5bn people all wanting the same thing.”
