Amazon has (finally) started delivering goods to the Amazon
On Friday Amazon started selling its Kindle online across Brazil.
This particular product launch has a special resonance for the world's largest online retailer. The Kindle Paperwhite will now be sold in the region of the world where the prestigious online company takes its name – the Amazon.
This marks the first time Amazon has expanded from ebooks into retail in Latin America's largest market. The online company will now have to negotiate Brazil's notoriously difficult logistical problems.
Speaking to Reuters Alex Szapiro, who has been hired to handle Amazon's operations across Brazil, said:
From north to south, from east to west, we are going to be delivering products across Brazil.
Szapiro said that ebook sales accounted for three per cent of all Brazilian book sales.
The expansion provides a huge opportunity for the company, with an increasingly affluent population of over 200m, Brazil is well placed to deliver growth in the online market place.
Brazilians spent as much as £7.5bn last year – a 25 per cent increase on 2012, according to market research company eBit.
The Kindle Paperwhite will sell for 479 reais (£122).
