Amazon announces roll-out of popular Kindle e-reader to 100 new countries
ONLINE retail giant Amazon announced yesterday that it is introducing the Kindle, its wireless eBook reader, in more than 100 countries – including the UK.
The move gives the world’s largest online retailer the widest global reach among its competitors, including chief rival Sony.
But it was not clear yesterday which UK mobile network providers would provide the Kindle’s wireless connection, a potentially lucrative deal which would be a coup for the carrier in question.
The Kindle will sell for $279 (£175) outside of the US, where the price is going to be cut by 13 per cent to $259, bringing it closer to rivals.
Amazon said over 200,000 English-language books from a host of publishers as well as more than 85 international and US newspapers and magazines would be available on the international device, which begins shipping 10 October.
“Our vision for Kindle is every book ever printed, in print or out of print, in every language, all available within 60 seconds,” said Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos.
