Germany eye historic victory
FORMER Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann has dismissed their historical failure to ever beat Italy as an anomaly as they prepare to meet in tonight’s Euro 2012 semi-final.
Eventual winners Italy knocked Klinsmann’s Germany out of the 2006 World Cup at the same stage, when current boss Joachim Low was his assistant. However, this year Low’s men are the in-form side, having won all four games in Poland and Ukraine to Italy’s one.
“That Germany have not won against Italy is nothing more than a coincidence,” said the former Tottenham striker. “The form on a given day is the decisive factor in such games.”
Low must decide whether to recall Mario Gomez, Lukas Podolski and Thomas Muller to face England’s conquerors, having beaten Greece 4-2 on Friday without the trio.
