City Link: Union calls on Vince Cable to nationalise company and save 2,000 jobs
Vince Cable has been urged to step in to save 2,000 people from losing their jobs on new year’s eve.
The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) said that it had been infromed by administrators that over 2,000 workers of stricken parcel delivery firm City Link may face redundency and urged Cable, the business and innovation secretary, to meet with the union immediately.
Mick Cash, general secretary of RMT, said that the government should nationalise City Link to conserve jobs.
It is crystal clear from today’s meeting that there has been a truly horrific catalogue of mismanagement at City Link and that staff and their union have been starved of basic information.
We want to put a plan together for a government-backed rescue that protects the business and the jobs it supports. If the government can nationalise the bankers then they can nationalise City Link, which is clearly in the public interest.
The company went into administration on Christmas day, after years of poor results and substantial losses.
