Inbee edges closer to Sorenstam tally with British Open triumph
SOUTH Korea’s Inbee Park hailed a new career peak after claiming her seventh Major at the Women’s British Open yesterday.
Park, 27, pipped compatriot Jin-Young Ko by three shots with a final score of 12 under par following a course record-equalling final round of 65 that featured seven birdies and an eagle. It was the world No1’s sixth win in her last 14 Majors and moved her to within three of Swede Annika Sorenstram’s record.
“It’s the greatest day of my life yet for sure,” she said. “Even though I made a couple of early mistakes, I was able to hold on really well on the back nine. The golfing god was on my side for sure.”
Teenage world No2 Lydia Ko,of New Zealand, tied for third with another South Korean, Ryu So-yeon. England’s Melissa Reid and Amy Boulden, of Wales, tied for ninth and were the highest-placed Britons.
Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat won his second European Tour title of the year , beating Sweden’s Robert Karlsson in the final of the inaugural Paul Lawrie Match Play in Aberdeen.
Aphibarnrat, who beat Scotland’s Marc Warren in the semi-final, held off a late Karlsson comeback to win by one hole.
