21 March on this day…
ARSENAL favourite Charlie George (left, with Liam Brady) made an unsuccessful return to Highbury with Southampton in a 1979 FA Cup sixth round replay that the Gunners would win 2-0. It was George’s spectacular extra-time goal in the 1971 FA Cup final against Liverpool that earned Arsenal their first Double and made the Islington 20-year-old a Highbury hero. The early promise was never quite fulfilled; George later moved to Derby County and Southampton, winning a solitary England cap in 1976. These days George is a familiar face at the Emirates Stadium and still a legend to the Arsenal faithful.
