BT's finance director is expected to announce his retirement within weeks and will step down later this year.

Tony Chanmugam, who has been BT's group finance director since December 2008, will also step down from the BT board.

Before becoming head of finance at the telecoms major, he held two senior positions at BT Retail, as chief financial officer and as managing director of BT Enterprises.

According to Sky News, which first reported Chanmugam's retirement, Egon Zehnder, the executive search firm, has been tasked with finding his successor.

BT pleased investors last week with plans for a raft of changes to its structure, following the completion of its £12.5bn takeover of EE.

A spokesman for BT declined to comment.
