Wrong kind of concrete brings Victoria line to a rush hour halt
THE LONDON Underground’s Victoria line was plunged into disarray yesterday, after a bizarre incident in which a signal room was flooded with wet concrete.
Services were completely stalled between Warren Street and Brixton during one of the busiest times of the day, putting nearly half of the line out of action, with severe delays on other parts of the service.
Transport for London (TfL) initially refused to confirm the disruption’s cause after pictures of the damaged room were leaked.
TfL eventually announced that the concrete came from contractors who were working on a new station adjacent to the control room.
“We understand that a foot of concrete burst into the control room having been poured into an escalator void,” said a spokesman for the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers.
