World time trial glory for Wiggo
SIR Bradley Wiggins sealed his first road world time trial title after defeating reigning champion Tony Martin with a dominant performance in Ponferrada, Spain yesterday.
Wiggins became only the second Briton to wear the rainbow jersey in this discipline following Chris Boardman’s victory in 1994, with the 34-year-old beating three-time winner Martin by 26.23 seconds.
Wiggins finally had his moment after finishing second to Germany’s Martin in both 2011 and 2013, insisting his latest gong is the perfect tonic for an indifferent year and the ideal way to mark his final World Championships appearance.
“It has been an up-and-down year,” he said. “This was my last World Time Trial Championship so to finish with a gold, I don’t know what to say.”
