WINNERS & LOSERS
A WEEKEND is a long time in sport, as this lot will attest. But while for some it was a few days to remember, others may wish they had never set foot out of the house.
WINNER
IAN HOLLOWAY
Few begrudged Olly a crack at the top flight after a career managing in the lower leagues, but even his biggest fans could not have guessed he’d lead Blackpool to a 4-0 win in their opening game.
WINNER
TYSON GAY
First he ended Usain Bolt’s two-year unbeaten streak over 100m, then on Friday he ran the fastest time over the same distance of anyone this year. Perhaps Bolt is not untouchable after all.
WINNER
DOMINIC CORK
Veteran Cork led Hampshire to the narrowest of victories in the Twenty20 Cup, beating Somerset by virtue of losing one wicket fewer. And all without the snubbed Kevin Pietersen too.
LOSER
YUVRAJ SINGH
A sportsman’s life is littlered with injuries and illnesses, but spare a thought for Yuvraj, who misses India’s one-dayer with Sri Lanka because he has dengue fever. Not even Darren Anderton had that one.
LOSER
IAN POULTER
One of England’s best bets for success at the USPGA, Poulter had his bid scuppered by a chest infection that forced him to withdraw before his final round and fly back to his sick-bed in Florida.
