WINNERS & LOSERS
A WEEKEND is a long time in sport, as this lot will attest. But while for some it was a few days to remember, others may wish they had never set foot out of the house.
WINNER – PAUL THE OCTOPUS
So popular is the psychic cephalopod that his German keepers have snubbed a cash-plus-animals bid from a Madrid zoo desperate for the World Cup’s real star. Has also spawned his own iPhone app.
WINNER – SAM WEALE
Who? The first British man to win an indvidual medal at the Pentathlon European Championship, that’s who. Weale, 28, took silver yesterday in Hungary after excelling in the run/shoot.
WINNER – ATTILIO LOMBARDO
Former Juventus, Lazio and, er, Crystal Palace winger Lombardo, last seen managing in the lower reaches of Italian football, has been plucked from obscurity to be a coach at Manchester City.
LOSER – RORY MCILROY
He shot an 80 on Friday and still came joint third at the Open. The prodigious Ulsterman will surely win a Major in due course but for now will be wondering what might have been.
LOSER – BRADLEY WIGGINS
A Tour de France campaign that promised much, after last year’s encouraging performance, seems to get worse by the day, with Wiggins now not even the best performing rider on Team Sky.
