Windows phones overtake Blackberry as UK’s third largest platform
Windows based phone sales accounted for 12 per cent of units in the UK in the three months to August, and in the past year has surged past rival Blackberry to become the third largest platform by sales.
New figures from the Kantar Worldpanel ComTech show that Windows has posted its highest ever sales share at 9.2 per cent, across five major European markets.
Last year Blackberry devices account for 10.1 per cent of UK sales in the three months to August, this year they took just 3.7 per cent. Microsoft has seen a rise from 4.5 per cent of market share to 12 per cent.
Apple and Android look set to maintain their spots as market leaders, with Android units comprising 56.3 per cent of sales and Apple products a further 27.5 per cent (but this time period doesn't include the newly released Apple 5S and 5C models).
Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, says that Android has now reached "a point where significant growth in developed markets is becoming harder to find." Sunnebo points to Android’s growth being led by Samsung, which is facing fresh challenges from Sony, Nokia and LG.
