Winchester named best place to live in Britain in Sunday Times list
The city of Winchester in Hampshire has been named the best place to live in Britain in the annual Sunday Times' Best Places to Live list.
The best places to live guide used data and statistics such as crime rates, school performance and house prices in its rankings.
Winchester, which is located on the edge of the South Downs National Park, came top of the list of locations across the UK which were selected for offering the best quality of life to the widest number of people. It was said to combine desirable features such as a positive community spirit, good local shops and services and attractive outdoor spaces.
The city was described as "practically perfect", with a "historic, cultured, foodie city with fine period architecture and a decent selection of independent stores". Excellent schools, top restaurants and the friendliness of its residents were also highlighted.
Other regional winners announced in the guide include Fitzrovia in London, Orford, in Suffolk, which came top of the East region, and Midhurst, in West Sussex, which topped the Southeast region.
