Wiggins fails in final while Mo’s a no-go
PHILOSOPHICAL Sir Bradley Wiggins looked to the 2016 Rio Olympics after being forced to settle for silver on his return to track cycling at the Commonwealth Games yesterday in Glasgow.
Wiggins and his team pursuit colleagues were soundly beaten by Australia in the final – one of two sour notes, along with the withdrawal of middle distance runner Mo Farah – on an otherwise golden first day for England.
“I don’t want to sound like Roy Hodgson but there were plenty of positives,” he said. “We’re all disappointed but Rio is the goal for this team and we are only going to get stronger. We’ve put in two world-class rides after just four weeks together, so we can be confident.”
Double Olympic champion Farah admitted defeat in his battle to be fit for Sunday’s 5,000m and the 10,000m next week following illness earlier this month.
