Why the EU referendum bill could now be dead in the water
James Wharton MP's EU referendum bill could now be dead before it even hits the next test. The proposed question apparently doesn't count as "clear, unambiguous and to the point":
Do you think that the United Kingdom should be a member of the European Union?
The Electoral Commission has done research to show that "a few people did not know whether or not the UK is currently a member of the EU and this presented a risk of misunderstanding." So this is the question they recommend:
Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union?
Or alternatively:
Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?
That amendment is likely to kill a bill that is already running out of time.
