Wawrinka beats Tsonga to keep French waiting
WORLD No9 Stan Wawrinka ended hopes of a first French male finalist at Roland Garros for 32 years when he saw off Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets yesterday in Paris.
The Swiss stayed on course for a second grand slam title, having claimed the 2014 Australian Open, with a 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory. World No15 Tsonga had ample opportunity to break Wawrinka’s serve in an attritional contest but failed to capitalise in sweltering conditions.
“It is a great feeling to play in another grand slam final,” said Wawrinka. “Against Jo it’s always a tough match, a tough battle, especially at Roland Garros. He played a great tournament here, he deserved to be in the final like me but I’m very happy I won today.”
Tsonga said: “It’s been two great weeks. I hoped it would be better but it wasn’t the case. I didn’t play much going into Roland Garros but getting to the semi-final was good.”
