Watch: Leaf’s-eye-view of a tree being hoisted to the top of the Walkie Talkie
Skyscrapers may be complex to build, but what about getting the furniture into them? You can usually squeeze a sofa into the lift – but a full-grown tree requires rather more specialist equipment.
The video below gives a leaf's-eye-view of the process involved in hoisting a palm tree into the top floors of the Walkie Talkie building in central London. From being attached to a joist, to the stomach-churning rise up 37 floors, to being manoeuvred into place by a group of very small-looking builders, it's a complex process.
The tree in the video is part of the "Sky Garden" on levels 35, 36 and 37 of the skyscraper.
Although occupiers started moving into the tower, which was developed by Land Securities and Canary Wharf Group, in May, the top three floors are yet to be completed. Once it's finished, though, the Sky Garden will include two restaurants, a cafe/bar, three event spaces and a private dining room.
