Walder puts the boot in to see off French threat
BAYONNE (3) vs WASPS (12)
FLY-HALF Dave Walder kicked all 12 points as Wasps preserved their 100 per cent European Challenge Cup record with an efficient, yet unspectacular, victory over French side Bayonne.
Walder kicked three penalties and a drop goal while the hosts replied through a Cedric Garica spot-kick.
Wasps were forced to play at least a quarter of the match with 14 men after Frenchman Serge Betsen and George Skivvington both received yellow cards. But it mattered little as the Premiership side still had more than enough to hold off late pressure from the home side.
Walder’s performance added further uncertainty as to the future of Wasps’ other fly-half, Danny Cipriani, although coach Tony Hanks is hopeful the England outcast will stay at the club. “My understanding is Danny is happy at Wasps and we’re happy to have him,” Hanks said.
“He’s still a young player who we’re keen to see him fulfil his potential on a long-term basis.
“We’ve started to talk to Dan and hopefully that won’t be something that’s drawn out,” he said. “I definitely hope he signs for more than one year.”
