United hit Galaxy for seven but Van Gaal not happy with squad
MANCHESTER United manager Louis van Gaal has declared himself unhappy with the balance of his squad despite watching them plunder seven goals against LA Galaxy in his first match in charge.
Striker Wayne Rooney, untried youngster Reece James and winger Ashley Young all scored twice in the 7-0 win after forward Danny Welbeck had opened the scoring in California on Wednesday night.
Midfielder Ander Herrera, a £30m capture from Athletic Bilbao, also impressed, as Van Gaal sent United out in the same 3-5-2 formation that he used with World Cup semi-finalists Holland. Van Gaal said he had rushed his new team into adopting the formation as an alternative to last season’s 4-3-3 amid concerns that United are overstocked with deep-lying forwards such as Rooney and Juan Mata.
“We have four No10s, so the selection is not balanced in my eyes,” said Van Gaal. “When you want to change a system, you must start at once. I can play 4-3-3 with three strikers on the bench, but I want to play with two strikers.”
