Uni pals set for European clash
HARLEQUINS centre Matt Hopper is relishing the chance to finally go head to head with former Cardiff University mate turned British and Irish Lion Jamie Roberts in the Heineken Cup tomorrow.
Roberts, who completed his medicine degree and joined French club Racing Metro this year, got his break with Cardiff when Hopper was captain of the university XV. But, should Roberts shake off an ankle problem, the alumni will finally meet on equal terms in Nantes.
“I went to university with Jamie Roberts but I have never played against him,” said Hopper.
“I was doing criminology and I captained the team in my last year so we knew each other that way. Hopefully we’ll catch up after, it’ll be good to see him.”
Elsewhere in the Heineken Cup Saracens face Zebre tomorrow, while in the Amlin Challenge Cup London Wasps play Grenoble and London Irish host Stade Francais.
