Under-fire ambassador Sir Kim Darroch has ‘full support’ of PM following leaked Trump emails
Downing Street has confirmed its “full support” for Sir Kim Darroch, the UK’s under-fire ambassador to the US, after Donald Trump said he would no longer deal with him.
In a series of tweets yesterday evening, the US president criticised Theresa May’s handling of Brexit, saying she and her “representatives” had created a “mess”.

He then launched a broadside against Darroch, saying he was “not liked or well though of within the US”.
He added: “We will no longer worth with him.”
The president’s comments came after leaked emails revealed that Darroch had called the current White House administration “uniquely dysfunctional” and that Trump “radiates insecurity”.
Darroch said that in order to get through to the president, “you need to make your points simple, even blunt”.
Downing Street called the leak “unfortunate” but reiterated its “full support” for the ambassador in a statement.
“We have made clear to the US how unfortunate this leak is. The selective extracts leaked do not reflect the closeness of, and the esteem in which we hold, the relationship,” a government spokesperson said.
“At the same time we have also underlined the importance of ambassadors being able to provide honest, unvarnished assessments of the politics in their country.

“Sir Kim Darroch continues to have the Prime Minister’s full support.
“The UK has a special and enduring relationship with the US based on our long history and commitment to shared values and that will continue to be the case.”
