UKCoal sees production slump after worker death
UK COAL said yesterday its third-quarter revenue fell 20 per cent on lower sales, and added it expected deep mine output for the year to miss its own estimates after a death at one of its mines hit production.
The firm said the death of a 46-year-old man at its Kellingley site in north Yorkshire means the plant will remain closed for the next fortnight, reducing its output for the remainder of the year.
Britain’s biggest coal producer now expects its output for 2009 to be around 6.2m tonnes, below its earlier estimate of 6.4m to 6.6m tonnes.
Total production for the third quarter and year-to-date was broadly in line with the same period last year at 1.8m tonnes and 5.4m tonnes respectively, the company said.
Third quarter sales fell to £95m compared with £119m last year.
