UK car output accelerates
BRITISH car manufacturers defied weak demand from abroad to increase production again in 2014, industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said yesterday.
Over the 12 months a total of 1.53m cars were manufactured, up 1.2 per cent on the year and the highest figure since 2007.
Of those, 332,952 were for the home market – up eight per cent on the year. The majority of 1.2m went to export, down 0.5 per cent.
“More than £7bn of investment into UK production facilities has been announced in the past two years, and we are now seeing the effects as new models begin production – with more expected in 2015,” said SMMT’s Mike Hawes.
