Two South African mines reopen this morning
Two South African mines suspended over the weekend reopened this morning, as labour unrest continues to swathe the country’s platinum belt in uncertainty.
Aquarius Platinum shut its Kroondal mine over the weekend, while Xstrata’s chrome mine was also shut.
Anglo American Platinum, the world’s largest producer of the silver metal, said its Rustenberg operations would open early tomorrow after being shut since last Thursday.
Strikes have continued in the region for five weeks, as miners protest about low wages.
Various platinum mines in the area have been hit by wildcat strikes since police killed 34 miners at Lonmin’s Marikana platinum mine on August 16, the bloodiest police action since the end of apartheid in 1994.
A total of 45 people have been killed in the strikes.
