Trinity Mirror to close nine of its Midlands titles
DAILY Mirror owner Trinity Mirror said yesterday that it plans to close nine local newspapers in the Midlands, putting 120 jobs at risk.
The firm said that it will close a clutch of weekly newspapers in the region, as well as two niche publications, the Earlsdon Blog and Farm Ad, resulting in the closure of its Burton and Walsall offices.
“The actions announced today are designed to protect our Midlands businesses. We are seeking volunteers from within affected groups in order to minimise any necessity for compulsory redundancies,” said Trinity Mirror regional managing director Georgina Harvey, adding that staff in other parts of its Midlands business were also being offered redundancy.
Local titles have been under pressure because of the downturn in the advertising market and the growth of internet news. The latest cuts at Trinity Mirror’s Midland operations follow around 70 job losses last year.
