TOKYO TOPS LIVING COST LEAGUE TABLE
TOKYO was yesterday named the world’s most expensive city, retaining its top spot on a list of the most pricey places to make a home, based on the cost of living. Of the top ten most expensive cities in the world, seven are in Europe, with Oslo – where a litre of local beer in a supermarket costs the equivalent of £4.57 – coming in second. London leapt five places to fifteenth in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s research, its highest position since before the global economic downturn in 2008, when it held seventh place. While the cost of a loaf of bread in the capital has tripled over the past five years, London is now one of the cheapest major European cities to get a two-course meal for two.
