1954, SWITZERLAND
Victory over hosts took England to the quarter-finals where holders Uruguay proved too strong
1958, SWEDEN
The tournament which saw Pele announce himself on the world stage, saw England fail to progress from Group 4 after defeat in a play-off to Soviet Union
1962, CHILE
England progressed to the last eight at the expense of Argentina, but lost 3-1 to eventual winners Brazil
1966, ENGLAND
Heroes were created and expectations raised for a lifetime as England lifted the trophy at Wembley, Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick downing West Germany 4-1 in the final
1970, MEXICO
The holders surrendered a two-goal lead in the quarter-final, losing to West Germany in extra time. Normal service was resumed with star-studded Brazil team crowned champions
1982, SPAIN
Having missed two tournaments, England stormed through the first group stage but goalless draws in the second saw the Three Lions fail to reach the semi-finals, despite ending the tournament unbeaten
1986, MEXICO
Six goals earned Gary Lineker the golden boot, but Diego Maradona’s Hand of God saw Argentina beat England in the last eight of a tournament that spawned the Mexican Wave
1990, ITALY
England scraped through the group, then limped past Belgium and Cameroon in extra time before Paul Gascoigne, and the rest of the nation, were reduced to tears in a semi-final defeat to West Germany on penalties
1998, FRANCE
Defeat to Argentina on penalties in the last 16 saw a teenage Michael Owen become England’s hero and David Beckham, sent off for kicking Diego Simeone, vilified
2002, JAPAN/SOUTH KOREA
Redemption for Beckham, who scored the only goal in a group stage win over Argentina from the penalty spot, but England bowed out in the quarter-final to 10-man Brazil
2006, GERMANY
England suffered all too familiar penalty shoot-out defeat in the quarter-final to Portugal after Wayne Rooney had been sent off in normal time
2010, SOUTH AFRICA
England’s worst ever World Cup finish came to an end in the last-16 with a 4-1 thumping by Germany, after Fabio Capello’s team had blundered through the group stage
