THREE OTHER BASTIONS OF BRITISH CUISINE
SCOTT’S
This restaurant and oyster bar is almost as much about seeing and being seen as it is about the food. That said, the menu is considered one of the finest examples of soophisticated British seafood around, with the likes of pan-fried slip soles with brown shrimps, Cornish seabass and skate wings with cockles. 20 Mount Street W1K 2HE, tel: 020 7495 7309.
THE ALBEMARLE
In this deeply pleasant dining room at the boutique Brown’s Hotel, the food is meticulously sourced. Potted Morecambe Bay shrimps; lamb’s sweetbreads with Peter Gott’s wild boar bacon, and salt beef and Kentish green bean salad are the kinds of well-composed dishes on offer that celebrate the fruits of these isles. 33 Albemarle Street, W1S 4BP, tel: 020 7493 6020.
SWEETING’S
No-bookings allowed at this City favourite that serves squeaky clean seafood straight from our seas. Sweeting’s has operated a roaring trade since 1889, and is full of loyal customers eating oysters, whelks, sole, fish and chips, fried whitebait and roll mops. You don’t have to be young and flashy to be popular. 39 Queen Victoria Street, EC4N 4SF, tel: 020 7248 3062.
