Tesco and Sainsbury’s maintain share after a festive dead-heat
BRITAIN’S biggest retailer Tesco and third-place grocer Sainsbury’s tied in the battle for sales growth in the key Christmas period, according to data published yesterday.
Market researcher Kantar Worldpanel said Tesco and Sainsbury’s both posted identical gross sales growth rates of 3.9 per cent in the six weeks ending
6 January, with market shares unchanged from a year ago.
Kantar said the overall grocery market grew 3.8 per cent, driven primarily by food price inflation rather than significant volume growth.
Kantar said Asda, which is not due to report until February, saw sales growth of 2.1 per cent over the six week period, while Morrisons’ sales fell by around one per cent.
