Target reached as fans flock to join campaign
MANCHESTER United supporters have flung the ball firmly back into the Red Knights’ court by responding in their thousands to the financiers’ call to arms.
The Red Knights urged fans to prove their support for the campaign to oust United’s current owners, the Glazer family, by pledging their allegiance online. A target of 100,000 names was set on Monday, and less than 48 hours later, had been passed, as disgruntled United followers flocked to the website.
The emphatic response increases pressure on the Red Knights – a group of United-supporting City heavyweights – to reveal their next move.
Just weeks ago the number of fans who had joined the campaign, co-ordinated by the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust, numbered only 36,000. Revelation of the amount of money the Glazers had taken out of the club saw it swell to 54,000, but that figure has almost doubled since the Red Knights went public.
