Stars flock to trading floor for charity day
COMEDIANS, film stars, footballers and royalty descended on Canary Wharf yesterday for BGC Group’s tenth annual charity fundraising day.
Chelsea skipper John Terry rubbed shoulders with his former rival ex-Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, while actor Stephen Fry crossed paths with Pulp Fiction star Samuel L. Jackson.
The bevy of celebs roaming BGC’s vast trading floor clinching the cash were raising money for a host of charities, including Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The event, compered by comedians Jack Whitehall and Paddy McGuinness, is held every year to commemorate BGC and Cantor Fitzgerald employees who lost their lives in New York on 11 September, 2001 and has raised $101m so far. Earlier in the day, Princess Beatrice and Amanda Holden added a touch of glamour to proceedings by calling in the orders. Later, the floor was abuzz after TV host Jonathan Ross swept in for some trading action.
“Someone asked me to buy two billion of something; someone asked to buy a bit of their of sandwich,” Ross told The Capitalist. “I don’t know the difference between two billion and a bit of a sandwich, but I think I persuaded Scotland to stay.”
