Spurs star faces police probe after fan claim
POLICE last night confirmed they are investigating an alleged assault by Tottenham full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto on one of his own fans at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Cameroon international confronted a fan near the dug-out shortly after Spurs’ shock 1-0 defeat by Wolves and had to be dragged away by assistant manager Joe Jordan.
“The police are investigating an allegation of assault following the Spurs v Wolves match at White Hart Lane,” a police spokesman confirmed. “There have been no arrests.”
Spurs say they are reviewing the incident although boss Harry Redknapp claims not to have seen it.
“We’re aware of the incident and investigating it. The police are speaking to everyone involved,” a Spurs spokesman added.
The allegation comes from the supporter, who gave a statement to security officials, along with Jordan.
An eye witness said the defender, who joined the north London club from Lens in 2006, raised his hands to the supporter’s neck after allegedly receiving verbal abuse.
The clash was not spotted on camera by broadcasters covering the match, so CCTV footage may be used.
Saturday’s defeat, which sees Redknapp’s men drop to fifth in the Premier League table, was met with a chorus of boos by home fans.
Spurs have the chance to make amends on Wednesday when they host sixth-placed Manchester City.
