Spurs snap up Friedel
THE FUTURE of error-prone Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has been plunged into fresh doubt after the club swooped for Aston Villa veteran Brad Friedel.
The arrival of the 40-year-old American, who has signed a two-year contract after moving on a free transfer, means Spurs now have three senior stoppers.
Besides Gomes and Friedel, manager Harry Redknapp also has Carlo Cudicini, who was handed a contract extension only last month.
Redknapp said: “It is good to have three such experienced top goalkeepers at the club. It means we have competition for places, particularly with the number of games we will hopefully face next year both domestically and in Europe.”
However, Friedel’s arrival will only put further pressure on Gomes, who made a series of high-profile gaffes last season and has been linked with a return to former club PSV Eindhoven.
The Brazilian allowed a Cristiano Ronaldo shot to squirm in against Real Madrid and then weeks later fumbled a shot from Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, although replays later showed the ball did not cross the line.
