Carroll unlucky in U21 stalemate
FOOTBALL: England Under-21s missed a hatful of chances but still claimed a valuable point in a 0-0 draw with Lithuania.
Newcastle striker Andy Carroll hit the post and bar in a stalemate that keeps Stuart Pearce’s side second in their qualifying group for the 2011 European Championships.
Arsenal full back Kieran Gibbs was withdrawn in the first half with an injury.
Six Wales changes for Argentina
RUGBY UNION: Scarlets centre Jonathan Davies has been named as one of six changes to the Wales team for Saturday’s visit of Argentina.
Davies, 21, comes in at inside centre, meaning Jamie Roberts takes the No13 shirt.
Coach Warren Gatland has also recalled Lions quartet Shane Williams, Stephen Jones, Matthew Rees and Martyn Williams, who were rested for last week’s narrow win over Samoa. Gareth Cooper is preferred to Dwayne Peel at scrum-half.
Westwood rues Hong Kong flop
GOLF: England’s Lee Westwood regrets playing last week’s Hong Kong Open, which saw him knocked off the top of the European Tour’s money list.
Northern Ireland youngster Rory McIlroy goes into this week’s season-ending tournament leading the Race to Dubai by €128,000, after finishing second in Hong Kong.
Westwood, who finished 54th, said: “I think it probably was a mistake. I didn’t know the course because I had never been there, but looking back it definitely didn’t suit me.”
Roddick ruled out of London finale
TENNIS: World No6 Andy Roddick last night withdrew from the World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena, London with injury.
The 27-year-old American, who finished Wimbledon runner-up in July, has been sidelined for five weeks with a knee injury.
Roddick said: “I’m really disappointed. I love playing in London and I’ve heard so many good things about the venue.”
He will be replaced by Robin Soderling for the finale, which begins on Sunday.
Paceman Lee mulling end of career
CRICKET: Australia fast-bowler Brett Lee admits he may be forced to retire by a persistent elbow injury.
The 33-year-old, who has taken 310 wickets in 76 Tests, is mulling his future after being ruled out for another 12 weeks.
Lee said: “It depends on how the operation goes – if that takes place – how the fitness is and how much I want it.”
