Slavery claims shock World Cup chiefs
FOOTBALL: Organisers of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have said they are appalled by reports at least 44 workers died between June and August due to poor working conditions that amounted to modern-day slavery. Workers from Nepal were said to have often gone unpaid and denied access to free drinking water. The organisers said in a statement: “There is no excuse for any worker to be treated in this manner.”
