Robson and Watson handed South American Fed Cup test
BRITAIN’S women tennis stars will have to overcome a tricky trip to Argentina if they are to achieve promotion to the Fed Cup’s World Group II, after the draw was made yesterday.
Judy Murray’s team, which includes world No41 Heather Watson and No45 Laura Robson, are ranked one place above Argentina but are likely to feel less at home on the clay courts.
Watson and Robson both won singles matches as Great Britain beat Bulgaria last week in Israel to set up a shot at qualifying for World Group II, the competition’s second tier.
Team captain Murray said: “Argentina away on clay will be a tough challenge for us but we have a strong squad and a huge opportunity to grab a place in the World Group. Vamos!”
Britain reached the same stage last year, only to lose 4-1 to Sweden, Robson breaking down in tears courtside after her loss to Sofia Arvidsson confirmed the defeat.
Argentina’s highest ranked player is world No195 Paula Ormaechea. They lie 17th in the Fed Cup rankings, one place behind Britain.
