Riga replaces sacked Powell
CHARLTON have replaced Chris Powell with an unheralded Belgian coach after the popular manager was sacked for refusing to back owner Roland Duchatelet’s plans.
Jose Riga, the former boss of another of Duchatelet’s clubs, Standard Liege, was last night confirmed as Powell’s successor at the Championship’s bottom club.
Ex-Addicks defender Powell, 44, had been in talks over a new deal to extend his three-year reign at The Valley before Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat at League One Sheffield United.
Belgian Duchatelet, who sealed his takeover in January, said: “There was good progress, but we could not reach an agreement over the club’s football strategy going forward.”
