Records tumble as Rory McIlroy claims Quail Hollow win
WORLD No1 Rory McIlroy carded a final-round 69 to storm to a record-breaking victory at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina last night.
Four-time Major winner McIlroy failed to repeat the heroics of his stunning round of 61 on Saturday but finished on a staggering 21 under par for the tournament, seven shots ahead of Americans Patrick Rodgers and Webb Simpson.
The Northern Irishman became the first two-time winner of the competition following his victory in 2010 and smashed the existing overall tournament record of 16 under, which was set by Anthony Kim in 2008.
United States trio Phil Mickelson, Gary Woodland and Robert Streb all finished on 12 under, nine shots behind McIlroy.
England’s James Morrison, meanwhile, claimed his second European Tour title yesterday after winning the Spanish Open by four strokes, while compatriot David Howell shared a four-way tie for second.
