Rail companies to be banned from double digit fare increases
RAIL companies will not be allowed to impose double digit fare price increases on commuters, the government will announce today.
Annual fare rises will be capped at three per cent above inflation, against the existing six per cent limit.
With inflation currently running at three per cent it is hoped this will stop what transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin will call an end to “double-digit back door rises”.
The minister will also confirm plans to make it easier for commuters to buy part-time season tickets and cheaper singles.
The plan has the approval of the Association of Train Operating Companies.
“The package of measures, which train companies have worked with the government to draw up, should make it quicker and easier than ever for people to get the best value ticket for their rail journey,” it said.
