PwC board member joins Duke of York in historic Shard abseil
LEGEND has it accountants are a boring lot. So thank goodness for PwC’s Richard Oldfield, who’s attempting to bust that image by throwing himself off the top of Europe’s tallest building.
Early next Monday morning, Oldfield will be hanging 1014m above the ground, ready to take part in the first – and only – abseil down all 87 floors of the Shard.
Joining the Duke of York, Ffion Hague and entrepreneur Luke Caldwell for the daunting descent Oldfield has already smashed his fundraising target and raised almost £35,000 for The Outward Bound Trust.
Though he admitted yesterday that he was “feeling a few nerves”, at least Oldfield should be comforted by the familiar surroundings – the Shard development replaced PwC’s old home (and Oldfield’s former office) in Southwark Towers.
AFTER a frantic fortnight of bidding, today marks your final chance to be in the running for City Wenlock, the Olympic mascot who was perched on the corner of Milk Street and Cheapside for the duration of the London 2012 Games.
As bidding entered the final stages yesterday afternoon City A.M.’s favourite bowler-hatted behemoth was close to fetching £17,000 – but that is sure to rise ahead of the deadline at 8pm this evening and could even surpass the highest price so far – the massive £20,000 paid for Union Flag Mandeville.
Signed by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, proceeds from the sale will benefit the Mayor’s Fund for London, which support projects to help young people and their families in the capital find routes into work.
But who is the lucky bidder that will walk away with their very own six-foot souvenir of the summer’s sporting spectacular?
Early bidding saw big spender Ian take the lead, but he has recently been taken over by the mysterious Max, who was last night top of the board with £16,814.00.
