Pressure mounts on boss Rodgers
PRESSURE continued to mount on Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers after his side required penalties to squeeze past League Two Carlisle in the Capital One Cup third round at Anfield last night.
Goalkeeper Adan Bogdan was the Liverpool hero has he made a hat-trick of saves in a shoot-out which the Reds won 3-2 after the two teams, separated by 65 places in the Football League ladder, were locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes.
Striker Danny Ings opened the scoring, only Derek Asamoah struck to level matters before the break. Liverpool entered the clash winless in five matches across all competitions and languishing 13th in the Premier League.
Skipper Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, ended his domestic goal drought as Manchester United reached the fourth round by beating Championship side Ipswich Town 3-0 at Old Trafford.
Rooney had not found the net in United colours since April but struck in the first half – his first strike in the League Cup since the 2010 final when the Red Devils beat Aston Villa. Midfielder Andreas Pereira, making his first competitive start for the club, added the second before substitute Anthony Martial maintained his scorching run of goalscoring form by notching in injury time.
A giant-killing never threatened to spoil ex-Newcastle boss Alan Pardew’s evening as Crystal Palace brushed aside south London rivals Charlton 4-1 at Selhurst Park, largely thanks to a Dwight Gayle treble. Forwards Jay Rodriquez, Sadio Mane and Shane Long all scored twice as Southampton thrashed MK Dons 6-0.
