Premier League: Rodgers: I don’t want us to grind out boring wins
LIVERPOOL 4 vs SWANSEA CITY 3
LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers insists he will stick with his swashbuckling approach to football, despite coming close to dropping points during yesterday’s seven-goal thriller at Anfield.
A set of braces from Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson mean Liverpool are the top scorers in the Premier League, yet the Reds were forced to scrap for the win following three Swansea goals from Wilfried Bony, who scored twice, and Jonjo Shelvey.
The score contrasted with Chelsea’s tight 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday, their fourth clean sheet in five league games, yet Rodgers says he is not looking to emulate the west Londoners.
“It is not our style. I worry always to play good football. I am not one that is totally satisfied by just grinding out results,” Rodgers said.
“It is about winning, that is what professional sport is about but I will always concentrate on performance. When we play well, more times than not we get the win.”
Liverpool were ahead just three minutes into the game when Sturridge rounded goalkeeper Michel Vorm and slotted the ball home, having been played in by Raheem Sterling.
The lead was doubled a quarter of an hour later when Sturridge laid the ball across for Henderson to curl in from outside the box. Yet within seven minutes the Swans were level.
Shelvey hit a thumping effort from the edge of the area in off the crossbar, before a Jonathan de Guzman free-kick was flicked on by Bony, deflected off Martin Skrtel and looped in.
Another header, this time from Sturridge, gave Liverpool the lead going into the break, before Bony was adjudged to have been pulled down in the box just moments into the second half, allowing him to step up and convert the penalty.
But on 76 minutes Henderson jabbed in a rebound to earn the win.
