The fire service was called to the airport at 8.30am, and crews had been stood down half an hour later. The aircraft was en route from Jersey to to London City Airport when the incident occurred.
The BBC spoke to Essex fire service divisional officer Neil Fenwick, who attended the incident. He said:
Our crews made sure that the fire was fully out but were not required to take any further action. We left the scene in the hands of the airport. This had the potential to be an extremely serious incident but everything which should happen in a situation like this did and the plane was able to land safely and no one has been hurt.
This is the second aviation-based incident reported in the UK today. Earlier, a plane was blown from a runway at Stornoway airport in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
