Photos of former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis are selling for literally tens of euros on Ebay
Greece may still be struggling with global debt, but at least former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis is a valuable asset on Ebay.
As the International Monetary Fund (IMF) continues to hammer out a €86bn (£67bn) bailout deal for debt-ridden Greece, sellers on online marketplace Ebay have been making a tidy profit on signed photographs of Varoufakis.
Yep: photos of Yanis are selling for literally tens of euros on the German version of the auction site:
The Capitalist spied two separate options for Varoufakis superfans on the website today – one "100% authentic original", with a Buy Now (or "Sofort Kaufen" – it's on German Ebay) price of $60 (£47), and a second autograph for around the same price, which the seller says was collected "by me personally in Berlin" (although there's a €7 delivery charge on the latter).
Autographs of the Greek financier, who was recently drafted in by the Labour party to advise Jeremy Corbyn, are surprisingly common on Ebay. Back in February, a photo of Varoufakis reclining in a leather wing-backed chair and signed with permanent marker was sold by a Eurozone fanatic in Switzerland for €76.
Varoufakis – Greece's motorbike-riding, leather jacket-wearing, Paris Match-posing former finance minister, who resigned from his position last July – recently announced his return to Europe's political scene by launching his own political party in Germany this year.
The Capitalist wonders whether the IMF needs to hand over another billion-euro loan if photos of Yanis perform so well on the global market? With an average retail price of €68.50, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras would only need to sell 125,547,462 autographs to make up the country's €86bn shortfall.
