People spend more time using technology than sleeping: What are they doing with their time?
People spend more time using technology than they do sleeping, according to Ofcom's latest report.
Adults in the UK spend on average eight hours and 41 minutes a day using media and communication devices, more than the eight hours and 21 minutes people spend each day sleeping.
If time spent multitasking on devices is taken into consideration, this jumps to 11 hours a day spent engaging with media technology.
So what are people doing with their time when they're using technology?
Watching takes up the most amount of time, followed by communicating, and surprisingly social networking occupies the least amount of time at 51 minutes a day.
A further breakdown of specific online activities shows people spend most of their time listening to live radio, closely followed by gaming and watching recorded TV.
Magazines fail to keep people occupied for more than 12 minutes a day on average, the activity people are spending the least amount of time on.
When it comes to different age groups, there’s no surprise that people spend more time using technology the younger they are, with 16-24 year-olds spending just over 14 hours a day with devices.
People aged 45-54 buck the trend however, spending more time with technology than those aged 35-44.
While watching television is still the biggest occupier of people's time across age groups, this is shrinking for newer generations, who are finding a new range of media and communication to occupy their time, such as video clips and TV shows and films on devices other than a TV set.
