Owen hot property but frosty on foreign suitors
Owen said yesterday he expects to leave St James’ Park when his contract expires in the next few weeks, and would prefer to join another outfit in the Premier League.
And despite his representatives sending out a so-called sales brochure in an apparent attempt to drum up interest in Owen’s signature, the 29-year-old maintains he is coveted by a host of teams in Britain and beyond.
“There has been a lot of interest from abroad and quite a bit from home as well, but obviously the Premier League is where I feel I belong,” said Owen.
“I played a year out in Spain and enjoyed it at Real Madrid but that confirmed to me that I definitely prefer the Premier League, so if it was to be a good English club, that would be my preference.”
Hull have made public their interest in a player whose stock has fallen as much as Newcastle’s since moving to the north east from Real Madrid for £16m in August 2005. But the former Liverpool trainee played down talk of a move to the KC Stadium.
He added: “I haven’t been made aware of that, it is a new one – but I have been linked with virtually every team in last few weeks.”
