‘Overrated’ Khan promises family beating
BRITISH light welterweight Amir Khan has vowed to beat the son of boxing trainer Angel Garcia after the Puerta Rican dismissed him as “an overrated fighter”.
Khan’s clash with WBC champion Danny Garcia, Angel’s son, is scheduled for Las Vegas on 14 July, the same day heavyweight David Haye will fight Dereck Chisora in London. Though initially being respectful when discussing Danny’s ability, Khan, in response to Garcia Senior’s provocations, promised the trainer that it would be his son who would pay in the ring.
“Danny’s father does a lot of talking, but at the end of the day he’s not the one who’s going to be in the ring,” said Khan.
“You can keep saying what you want, that I’m overrated and I’m no good, but when I beat your son, am I still going to be overrated?
“I have seen him fight, he has a dangerous style. Don’t get me wrong, he is tough, but he has never faced anyone like me. I am the best guy he has faced.
“It’s a shame that his father will not be taking the punches that his son is going to suffer for. I will be on my A game and I will knock Garcia out.”
Khan agreed to fight Garcia after his rematch with America’s Lamont Peterson, for the WBA and IBF titles, collapsed due to the latter’s failed drugs test. He may yet, however, be awarded both belts, potentially upgrading the light-welterweight bout to a unification clash for three world titles.
